Guide Step

Quick Answer: where to find oak wood

Walk the route between Aunty's House and Bufo's House and look for logs drawn as dark green pieces on the ground. Your first set sits at a bend along that route, another set is next to a campfire on the way to Bufo, and more are scattered further along the same path - enough for a full haul without leaving the corridor. The fact that saves the most time: Winter Burrow oak wood needs only your **first** axe. The Sandstone Axe, made from a Twig, a Pebble and Flax Fiber, chops it fine. You do not need an upgraded tier, and if a guide tells you otherwise it is wrong - see the correction further down. Strike a log repeatedly until it breaks apart into pickup-sized pieces, then collect those. The one real gate is regional. Oak grows in Bufo's area, around the Gnarled Oaks, and getting there runs through Aunty's questline - a cutscene in that chain clears the blockage that opens the way in. If you cannot reach the corridor yet, that is a story-progress problem, not a tool problem.

  • Winter Burrow oak wood location: the route between Aunty's House and Bufo's House, drawn as dark green logs.
  • Three reliable spots on that route: a bend early on, beside a campfire, then scattered further along.
  • Tool needed: the starting Sandstone Axe. Nothing higher.
  • Gate: access to the Gnarled Oaks region opens through Aunty's questline.

Guide Step

There is no Iron Axe in this game

This deserves its own heading because it sends people on a hunt that cannot end. At least one site claims hardwood in Winter Burrow requires "an Iron Axe or better". There is no Iron Axe. The game has three craftable axes - Sandstone, Flint and Granite - and oak needs only the first of them. If you are swinging at a log and nothing is happening, the cause is almost never your axe tier. Check whether the object is actually a harvestable log rather than background scenery, and check that you have an axe equipped rather than a pickaxe or shovel. Those two account for nearly every "my axe will not cut oak" report.

  • Craftable axes: Sandstone, Flint, Granite. There is no Iron Axe.
  • Oak is cut by the Sandstone Axe, the first one you make.
  • Nothing happening? Check it is a real log, and check an axe is equipped.
  • The Flint Axe uses no oak wood in its own recipe.

What Winter Burrow oak wood is actually spent on

Winter Burrow oak wood has three jobs, and knowing which one you are gathering for tells you how much to carry home. First, planks. An Oak Plank costs 2 Oak Wood, and the recipe unlocks after you place the simple bed. Every large furniture piece eats planks, so the plank step is where oak demand really begins. Second, tools. All three Granite tools - Axe, Pickaxe and Shovel - share one recipe: 2 Oak Wood, 1 Pine Wood, 1 Granite and 1 Wool Yarn. They differ only in how the recipe unlocks. The Granite Axe comes through Bufo's tasks, and the Granite Pickaxe and Granite Shovel through Gnawtusk's, the shovel specifically after finding Aunty. That shared recipe is genuinely useful to know, because one gathering trip can cover several tool upgrades at once. Third, furniture, which is by far the largest sink. The Planter Box also wants oak: 2 Granite, 4 Oak Plank, 4 Beech Plank and 5 Flax Fibre, unlocked from Aunty after the healing tea.

  • Oak Plank = 2 Oak Wood. Recipe unlocks after placing the simple bed.
  • Granite Axe, Granite Pickaxe and Granite Shovel all use 2 Oak Wood + 1 Pine Wood + 1 Granite + 1 Wool Yarn.
  • Planter Box = 2 Granite + 4 Oak Plank + 4 Beech Plank + 5 Flax Fibre.
  • The Oak Blueprint itself is a random world scroll, but it is guaranteed from Bufo's questline.

The full oak furniture set and what it costs

The nine-piece set feeds the Oak House achievement, and it is the biggest oak sink in the game, which asks you to craft all nine. This is the table worth having open before a gathering run, because the plank requirements are where people run short.

  • Oak Chair: 4 Oak Wood, 1 Oak Plank, 2 Flax Yarn.
  • Oak Stool: 3 Oak Wood, 2 Wool Yarn.
  • Oak Table: 4 Oak Wood, 4 Oak Plank, 4 Flax Yarn.
  • Oak Desk: 4 Oak Wood, 4 Oak Plank.
  • Oak Armchair: 4 Oak Wood, 2 Oak Plank, 6 Flax Yarn, 1 Silk Yarn.
  • Oak Desk Stool: 4 Oak Wood, 1 Oak Plank, 2 Wool Yarn.
  • Oak Side Table: 4 Oak Wood, 2 Oak Plank, 2 Flax Yarn.
  • Oak Bed: 4 Oak Wood, 8 Oak Plank, 6 Wool Yarn, 6 Silk Yarn.
  • Oak Storage Drawers: 2 Oak Wood, 4 Oak Plank, 1 Flax Yarn.

Total oak for the full set

Adding the table up gives 33 Oak Wood used directly plus 26 Oak Planks, and each plank is 2 more Oak Wood - so roughly 85 Winter Burrow oak wood for all nine pieces. That total is our arithmetic from the recipe list above, not a figure quoted by a source, so treat it as a planning estimate rather than a hard number.

Guide Step

A sensible gathering loop

Because oak sits on a corridor between two NPC areas, it is one of the safer runs in the game. Both ends give you somewhere warm to stop, which means you can push a little harder on the middle stretch than you would on an open route. Start from whichever of Aunty's or Bufo's is already unlocked and warm. Work the corridor in one direction only, hitting the bend logs first, then the campfire set, then whatever is scattered beyond. Break each log fully before moving on - half-broken logs are easy to walk away from and you will not remember which ones you left. Turn around at the far NPC, warm up there, and come back along the same line picking up anything you could not carry. Decide your target before you leave. "Enough for one Granite tool" is 2 Oak Wood and a short trip. "Enough for the Oak Bed" is 4 Oak Wood plus 8 planks, which is 20 Oak Wood in total and a genuinely long haul. Those are very different runs and packing for the wrong one is how people end up making four trips.

  • Run the corridor one way, then back. Both ends have a warm stop.
  • Break each log completely before moving on.
  • One Granite tool = 2 Oak Wood. The Oak Bed = 20 Oak Wood once planks are counted.
  • Pine Wood is a separate material and the Granite tools need it too - do not confuse the two.

What we could not confirm

Publishing the gaps honestly is more useful than filling them in. The Sandstone Axe recipe is confirmed as Twig, Pebble and Flax Fiber, but no source we trust states the quantities, so we have not invented any. The unlock source for the Oak Desk, Oak Armchair and Oak Desk Stool is not documented anywhere we could verify - only the Chair, Stool and Table are confirmed as coming from Bufo's tasks after the wooden key goes to Pollywog. The exact bridge geometry for entering the Gnarled Oaks rests on a single source. And there is a long-running rumour about a secret path behind the giant three-rooted oak in the Gnarled Oaks: the discussion thread we read ends with nobody having found it, which is worth knowing before you spend an evening looking.

  • Unconfirmed: Sandstone Axe ingredient quantities.
  • Unconfirmed: unlock source for Oak Desk, Oak Armchair, Oak Desk Stool.
  • Single-sourced: the exact bridge route into the Gnarled Oaks.
  • Unresolved: the rumoured secret path past the three-rooted oak. No one in the thread found it.

Frequently asked questions

The oak questions that come up most.

  • Where do I find Winter Burrow oak wood? Along the route between Aunty's House and Bufo's House, as dark green logs.
  • Which axe do I need for oak? The Sandstone Axe - your first one. No upgrade required.
  • Is there an Iron Axe? No. Sandstone, Flint and Granite are the three craftable axes.
  • How much oak makes a plank? An Oak Plank costs 2 Oak Wood, unlocked after you place the simple bed.
  • How much oak does the whole furniture set need? About 85 by our arithmetic - 33 direct plus 26 planks at 2 each.
  • Why can I not reach the oak area? Region access opens through Aunty's questline, not through a better tool.

Supply Tip 1

The Sandstone Axe is enough for oak. Do not farm for a higher tier you do not need.

Supply Tip 2

Decide the target first: 2 Oak Wood for a Granite tool, about 20 for the Oak Bed.

Supply Tip 3

Run the Aunty-to-Bufo corridor one way and back, using both NPC areas as warm stops.
