Guide Step

Quick answer: there are two Pickaxe stages

Your first tool is the Sandstone Pickaxe. After the Owl takes Aunty, cross the bridge beyond Aunty's house, find Bufo at the stone bench, and bring 5 Pebbles plus 2 Twigs. Bufo gives you the Sandstone Pickaxe directly; it breaks basic rocks and opens the blocked route north of your burrow. The second tool is the Granite Pickaxe. After Aunty is rescued and the Gnawtusk stash sequence is complete, finish Bufo's An Axe for Bufo quest to unlock its recipe. Craft it at your burrow workbench with 1 Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, and 1 Oak Wood. That stronger tier breaks the darker Granite boulders the first Pickaxe cannot damage.

  • Sandstone Pickaxe: give Bufo 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs after the Owl takes Aunty.
  • Granite Pickaxe recipe: complete An Axe for Bufo after rescuing Aunty and finishing the early Gnawtusk stashes.
  • Granite Pickaxe materials: 1 Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, 1 Oak Wood.
  • Do not confuse a recipe unlock with a crafted tool; the stronger Pickaxe must be made at the home workbench.

Guide Step

Get the Sandstone Pickaxe from Bufo

Bufo does not appear at the start. Complete the early lessons Aunty gives you, return to her after cooking and crafting, and continue until the Owl kidnapping scene. You can then pass Aunty's house, cross the bridge, and follow the path to Bufo's home. The nearby fire pit is a useful reset if the trip is cold. Speak to Bufo at the stone bench and accept the request. Pebbles and Twigs can be gathered in the area you just crossed. Return with exactly 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs; Bufo hands over the Sandstone Pickaxe, so there is no separate workbench craft for this first tier. Use it on basic rocks and on the three-rock blockage north of your burrow.

Guide Step

Craft the Granite Pickaxe without getting stuck

The apparent problem is that the stronger recipe needs 1 Granite while Granite boulders need the stronger tool. Solve it with a loose Granite chunk, which can be picked up by hand. Check the Aunty-to-Bufo corridor and the Moss region; the dedicated Granite guide shows the exact blue-grey pickup. Wool Yarn comes from knitting Fur Tufts, while Pinewood and Oak Wood come from their matching forest resources. Once all four ingredients are ready and the recipe unlock screen has appeared, use the workbench in your burrow. Put the finished Granite Pickaxe on quick-select and test it on a dark blue-grey Granite boulder. If only the recipe is in the handbook, the boulder will still ignore you.

  • Material gate: 1 loose Granite, 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, 1 Oak Wood.
  • Craft gate: make the tool at the home workbench; a handbook entry alone is not enough.
  • World test: target a darker blue-grey Granite boulder, not a common rock or background stone.

Guide Step

Troubleshooting a Pickaxe that will not work

Read the failure before changing routes. No Pickaxe from Bufo usually means the Owl scene has not happened, the request is not accepted, or the 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs were not handed in. No Granite recipe means An Axe for Bufo or the preceding rescue and stash progression is incomplete. A Granite recipe but no tool means you still need the four materials and the home workbench. A crafted Granite Pickaxe that appears ineffective usually means the target is not a Granite boulder, the wrong tool is selected, or the object is background scenery. Test in daylight on the boulder shape shown above.

  • Missing first tool: check Owl kidnapping state, Bufo dialogue, 5 Pebbles, and 2 Twigs.
  • Missing stronger recipe: finish Aunty rescue, Gnawtusk stashes, and An Axe for Bufo.
  • Recipe visible but tool absent: collect all four materials and craft at the home workbench.
  • Tool equipped but no hit: compare the target with the dark blue-grey Granite boulder screenshot.
