Winter Burrow Chase That Owl - Why You Cannot Find Aunty by Searching

Aunty is not hidden anywhere. The rescue is a cutscene that fires when you finish Gnawtusk's errands. This is the gate order for the whole chapter, plus the bridge repair that starts it.

Quick Answer: you cannot find Aunty by searching

This is the part worth reading before you walk another screen. When the owl carries Aunty off and your objective changes to Find Aunty, the game is not asking you to locate her. There is no owl nest to discover, no tree to climb, no hidden screen with Aunty in it. The rescue is a **cutscene**. It fires on its own once you have worked through Gnawtusk's errands, and it puts Aunty back in your own burrow - ill, and needing medicine. Until that chain is done, no amount of exploring will produce her. So "find Aunty" is really a question about which gate you are stuck behind, not about where to look. The rest of this page is the gate order, and the one navigation mistake that makes this chapter feel far worse than it is.

  • There is no owl nest and no findable Aunty location - you cannot find Aunty by walking. Stop sweeping the map.
  • The rescue is a cutscene triggered by progress, not by exploration.
  • It ends with Aunty back in your burrow, unwell - the chapter is not over at that point.
  • If you are stuck, work out which gate you are behind: Bufo, Gnawtusk, or the dark area.

Before the owl: repairing the broken bridge

The chapter opens earlier than most people remember, with a bridge. Head east from your burrow and you reach two leaf-covered pathways. Take the **lower** one, heading right. That brings you to a fallen bridge you cannot cross. Interacting with it opens a panel titled Broken bridge, which spells the problem out: "A fallen bridge stands in front of you, clearly battered by time. It doesn't seem like you'll be able to cross it until you repair it." Underneath are two material counters. The requirement is **5 Beech Planks and 5 Flax Rope**, and you can see both counters in the screenshot below. Craft both at the Woodworking Workbench inside your burrow, come back, and pick Repair. There is also a Track button, which is worth using if you would rather have the game remind you what is outstanding. Crossing that bridge is what gets you to Aunty in the first place. The owl comes later.

  • Route: east from the burrow, then the lower of the two leaf pathways, heading right.
  • Bridge cost: 5 Beech Planks and 5 Flax Rope.
  • Both are crafted at the Woodworking Workbench at home, not found.
  • Use Track on the panel if you want the objective pinned while you gather.

What actually triggers the abduction

Aunty teaches you the shovel. Returning that shovel to her is what sets off the cutscene where the owl takes her - so if you are wondering whether you did something wrong, you did not. It is scripted and unavoidable. That matters for a practical reason: people sometimes hold onto the shovel, assuming handing it over is optional or that they should prepare first. It is neither. The story does not advance until you give it back.

  • Aunty teaches the shovel; returning it to her fires the owl cutscene.
  • It is scripted. You cannot prevent it and you did not trigger it early by mistake.

The gate order after the owl

Once the objective reads Find Aunty, the way to find Aunty is to work through a chain of gates rather than looking for a person. In rough order: First, Bufo. He wants materials, and clearing his request is what opens the path north. Our /articles/winter-burrow-how-to-get-pickaxe page covers that exchange and the pickaxe that comes out of it. Second - and this is the step that ruins people's evenings - **head north from Bufo and then go left, to the west.** Three separate sources make the same point, one player putting it bluntly: this area has a lot of confusing sub-areas and it is easy to get lost. Go the wrong way and you simply never meet Gnawtusk, which means the chapter has no visible way forward. If you are north of Bufo and nothing is happening, you probably went right. Third, Gnawtusk's errands. He asks for buried herb stashes. Hand in the first two and he gives you the Lantern, which is what makes the dark area workable. Every dig spot and route for that is on /articles/winter-burrow-gnawtusk-stash-locations - we are deliberately not repeating them here. Finish that chain and the rescue cutscene plays.

  • Gate 1 - Bufo: clear his request to open the north path.
  • Gate 2 - navigation: north from Bufo, then LEFT (west). Going right means missing Gnawtusk entirely.
  • Gate 3 - Gnawtusk: hand in the first two herb stashes to receive the Lantern.
  • Then the rescue cutscene fires by itself and Aunty appears back in your burrow.

Why this chapter disorients so many players

It is not just you. Two things make this stretch genuinely harder to read than the rest of the game. The first is structural: there is no in-game record of which areas you have already explored. The map added after launch gives you a rough shape of the world, but it does not tick off screens you have visited, so in a region full of similar-looking sub-areas you have no way to tell a new screen from one you crossed ten minutes ago. The second is that the objective wording actively misleads. Find Aunty reads like a search task, so people try to find Aunty the way they would find an item. It is a progress task. Those are different problems and they want different behaviour from you - one rewards wandering, the other punishes it. There is a data point that backs this up. Steam's achievement completion rates drop sharply across this chapter: Bridge of Reunion sits around 79.6%, Aunty's Saviour around 53.8%, and Family Reunion around 38.7%. That fall from roughly four in five players to barely half is a reasonable proxy for where people put the game down.

  • The game does not track which screens you have explored, and the region repeats visually.
  • "Find Aunty" is worded like a search, but you find Aunty by advancing the chain, not by exploring.
  • Steam completion: Bridge of Reunion ~79.6%, Aunty's Saviour ~53.8%, Family Reunion ~38.7%.
  • If you feel lost here, the fastest fix is naming your gate rather than walking another loop.

After the rescue: the stash that is not in the world

The cutscene is not the end of it. Aunty comes back ill, and curing her needs medicine from Gnawtusk - which means one more herb stash. Here is the trap. That final stash is not out in the world. It is sitting in **Aunty's backpack, on the floor of your own burrow.** People walk right past it and go back out to dig, because everything up to this point trained them to look outside. Once you have handed it over and the healing tea is made, the chapter closes. The larger 5-stash herb requirement and the planters that make herbs renewable come later - that is covered on /articles/winter-burrow-stash-of-common-herbs.

  • Aunty returns ill. The chapter continues past the cutscene.
  • The last stash is in Aunty's backpack on your burrow floor, not out in the world.
  • Gnawtusk turns it into the medicine that cures her.
  • The later 5x herb quest is a separate thing - see the common herbs guide.

What we could not confirm

A few things that circulate about this chapter did not survive checking, and we would rather say so than repeat them. Bufo's exact material quantities come from a source we could not load, so we are not restating numbers here - use the pickaxe guide and read the counter in your own quest panel. The shovel's formal name and recipe are similarly muddled between sources; one reachable guide calls it simply "Shovel" and lists Three Pebbles, Four Twigs and Two Beech. The widely repeated "Sandstone Shovel" recipe looks like it may be the Sandstone Axe recipe misfiled. The three achievement names are visible on Steam but their descriptions are hidden, so we have names and completion rates only. And on direction: the bridge route is described as east by the source we could verify. You will see "south-east" quoted elsewhere; we could not confirm it.

  • Unconfirmed: Bufo's exact material amounts.
  • Unconfirmed: whether the tool is formally the "Sandstone Shovel", and its exact recipe.
  • Unconfirmed: achievement descriptions (hidden on Steam). Names and rates only.
  • No source supports an owl nest, a climbable tree, or any findable Aunty location.

Frequently asked questions

The find Aunty questions people ask while stuck on this objective.

  • Where do I find Aunty after the owl takes her? Nowhere - she is not findable. Finish Gnawtusk's errands and a cutscene brings her back to your burrow.
  • Is there an owl nest? No source supports one. There is nothing to climb to and nothing to track.
  • What does the broken bridge need? 5 Beech Planks and 5 Flax Rope, both crafted at the Woodworking Workbench.
  • I went north from Bufo and there is nothing there. Go left, to the west. Going right misses Gnawtusk completely.
  • How do I get the Lantern? Hand Gnawtusk the first two herb stashes.
  • Aunty is back but sick - now what? The last stash is in her backpack on your burrow floor. Take it to Gnawtusk for the medicine.

Supply Tip 1

Stop searching. Name the gate you are behind: Bufo, the west turn, or Gnawtusk.

Supply Tip 2

Craft 5 Beech Planks and 5 Flax Rope before walking back to the bridge.

Supply Tip 3

After the rescue, check Aunty's backpack on your own floor before going out to dig.
