What unlocks the first Pickaxe

The practical answer to how to get Pickaxe access is Bufo's first request. The first tool is the Sandstone Pickaxe, and Bufo gives it to you directly. It is not a hidden pickup and it is not crafted at the home workbench. First complete Aunty's early cooking and crafting lessons and keep returning to her until the Owl takes her. That story event opens the path beyond Aunty's house. Cross the repaired bridge, continue into the next region, and follow the route to Bufo's home. Speak to Bufo at the stone bench. The request shows two counters: 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs. Collect those materials in the nearby outdoor area, hand them over, and Bufo rewards the Sandstone Pickaxe.

  • Story gate: finish Aunty's lessons until the Owl kidnapping scene.
  • Route gate: pass Aunty's house and cross the bridge toward Bufo.
  • Material request: 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs.
  • Reward: Sandstone Pickaxe handed over by Bufo; no first-tier workbench craft.

Clean unlock checklist

Before assuming the quest is broken, verify the sequence in order. If Aunty is still waiting for a lesson, cook or craft the item she requested and speak to her again. If the Owl scene has happened but the bridge route feels unfamiliar, follow the only open path past Aunty's home and use the outdoor fire pit near Bufo as a warmth checkpoint. If Bufo is present but no material counters appear, finish the current dialogue. If the counters are active, gather ordinary loose Pebbles and Twigs nearby rather than searching for Granite. Keep all 7 requested items in your carried inventory when you return to the stone bench.

Guide Step

Collect 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs

Pebbles are the common stone material, not the darker Granite shown in later guides. Search loose ground pickups and any basic resource opportunities already available around the route. Twigs are the small wood resource found outdoors. The request HUD is the best source of truth: watch the first counter move toward 5 and the second toward 2. Do not spend those materials on repairs while the request is active. Once both counters are satisfied, return to Bufo and complete the hand-in. The Sandstone Pickaxe should enter your tool progression immediately after the conversation, so check the inventory or quick-select bar before leaving.

  • Pebbles needed: 5 common stone pieces.
  • Twigs needed: 2 common wood pieces.
  • Keep both materials in inventory for the hand-in.
  • Check for the Sandstone Pickaxe after Bufo accepts the request.

Guide Step

Verify the Sandstone Pickaxe

The first clean test is the basic rock blockage north of your burrow. Put the Sandstone Pickaxe on quick-select, stand close to the basic rocks, and use the mining action. The object should react and eventually clear, opening access toward later NPC routes. This does not mean every dark boulder is now mineable. Granite boulders require the later Granite Pickaxe. If the first basic rocks do not react, confirm Bufo actually completed the hand-in and that the Sandstone Pickaxe is selected. If only a Granite boulder refuses to break, the first tool is working as designed; move to the broader Pickaxe Guide for the stronger tier.

Common Mistakes

The most common mistake is looking for a workbench recipe for the first Pickaxe. Bufo gives the Sandstone tool directly. The second mistake is collecting Granite instead of common Pebbles for the 5/2 request. The third is reaching Bufo before completing the dialogue that activates the counters. The fourth is testing the new Sandstone Pickaxe on a Granite boulder and deciding it is broken. Use the tool-tier distinction: basic rocks and Pebbles first, darker Granite boulders later. Finally, do not let a cold run hide a correct quest state; warm at the nearby fire pit before gathering.

When to Use the Broader Guide

Use these steps when the missing item is the first Sandstone Pickaxe from Bufo. Once that tool clears a basic rock gate, move to the broader Pickaxe Guide for the Granite Pickaxe recipe and boulder checks. If the stronger recipe asks for Granite, use the Where to Find Granite guide for one loose pickup, then the main Granite Guide for farming. Follow the next visible blocker: Bufo's request, the loose resource, then the stronger boulder tool.

Quick Troubleshooting

No path beyond Aunty means her early lessons or the Owl scene is incomplete. No Bufo counters means you need to finish the conversation at the stone bench. A stuck counter means the requested Pebbles or Twigs are missing from the carried inventory. No tool after 5/2 means you should talk to Bufo again and finish the hand-in. A basic rock that will not react means the Sandstone Pickaxe is not selected. A darker blue-grey boulder that will not react is normal: that target needs the Granite Pickaxe.

Supply Tip 1

Trigger the Owl scene before looking for Bufo.

Supply Tip 2

Carry 5 Pebbles and 2 Twigs back to the stone bench.

Supply Tip 3

Use the Sandstone Pickaxe on basic rocks, not Granite boulders.
