Quick Answer: where to get pebbles

Your first five Winter Burrow pebbles are behind your own burrow, past some harmless bugs. That is enough for Bufo's opening request and it needs no tool at all. After that there are three renewable sources. Players report Winter Burrow pebbles respawning in the lake area above Bufo's house, which makes it a route worth re-walking. You can also farm them by breaking the big grey round boulders scattered around the world. And once you have the Granite Pickaxe, Granite Boulders yield granite and sometimes pebbles too, so granite mining doubles as a pebble run. One rule matters more than any location, and it is buried in the next section: pebbles sitting in your burrow storage do not count toward quest objectives. They count for crafting, but not for quests.

The storage rule that breaks quest counters

If a quest is asking for pebbles and your counter refuses to move despite a chest full of them, this is why. **Pebbles kept in burrow storage do not count toward quest objectives.** They are perfectly usable for crafting from storage, which is exactly what makes the behaviour confusing - the material works for one purpose and not the other. The fix is trivial once you know: while a pebble quest is active, move them out of the chest and into your backpack. Then talk to the NPC again. This is worth internalising as a general habit rather than a pebble-specific trick, because the same pattern catches people on other quest materials too.

  • Storage pebbles count for crafting but NOT for quest objectives.
  • Move them into your backpack while the quest is active.
  • If a counter will not move, check the chest before re-walking the route.

Everything pebbles are spent on

Knowing what spends Winter Burrow pebbles tells you how many to carry. There are four sinks that matter. The stove repair is the big one at 8 pebbles, and it is what unlocks cooking - which makes it one of the highest-value 8 pebbles in the game. The basic Shovel costs 3 Pebbles, 4 Twigs and 2 Beech, and Aunty is the one who teaches it. Bufo's opening quest wants 5 pebbles plus 2 twigs. His later "Pebbles and Flint" quest wants 10 pebbles. So a rough plan: 5 for Bufo's first ask, 8 for the stove, 3 for the shovel, then 10 more when the second Bufo quest lands. Roughly 26 across the early game, gathered in small batches rather than one haul.

Pebbles versus granite - telling them apart

Winter Burrow pebbles and granite get confused constantly, and the confusion runs in both directions. The cleanest description we have is of the granite side: loose granite on the ground "looks almost like pebbles, but more crooked and black". So if you are looking at something pebble-shaped that reads darker and more angular than the ones around it, that is granite, and it is worth picking up because granite is the scarcer material. On the boulder side the distinction is about tools. Ordinary grey round boulders break for the Sandstone Pickaxe. Granite Boulders will not - they need the Granite Pickaxe. That refusal is a reliable identifier: a boulder your starting pickaxe cannot touch is almost certainly granite. One relevant piece of trivia about the tool chain: Bufo hands you the finished Sandstone Pickaxe rather than a recipe for it. That is also why some players find the "craft all pickaxes" achievement never fires - you never actually craft the sandstone one. We could not confirm whether that has since been patched.

  • A boulder your first pickaxe cannot break is very likely granite.

Getting to Bufo, and what we could not confirm

Bufo works at a stone bench in a spot where the cold does not affect you, which makes it a useful place to stop. From the fire pit, head north-east to where the path splits between the trees. On the unconfirmed side: we have one player report for pebbles respawning at the lake, not a documented respawn rate or timer, so treat "it respawns" as likely rather than certain. We could not confirm whether every large grey boulder drops pebbles or only some of them. The flint quantity in the "Pebbles and Flint" quest is not documented anywhere we could verify - only the 10 pebbles is. And we could not establish whether the pickaxe achievement issue was ever fixed.
