Quick Answer: what a Fur Tuft is for

Fur Tufts are the raw material for Wool Yarn. The game has exactly two yarn types - Flax Yarn, which comes from Flax Fibre, and Wool Yarn, which comes from Fur Tufts. That is the whole system. This matters more than it first looks, because Wool Yarn is a component of the Granite Shovel, and the Granite Shovel is what lets you dig. So a shortage of Winter Burrow fur tuft early on quietly blocks a whole branch of progression that appears to have nothing to do with knitting. The good news is that Fur Tufts are available from the starting area, so you are never truly locked out. You just need to know where they cluster and that you cannot spin them standing up.

  • Fur Tuft becomes Wool Yarn. Flax Fibre becomes Flax Yarn. Those are the only two yarns.
  • Wool Yarn is a Granite Shovel component, so fur shortages block digging.

You can only knit sitting down

This trips up more people than any farming problem. Knitting is not a menu you can open anywhere. You have to be sitting in your armchair, or in any chair you have crafted, before the option is available. Repairing the armchair costs 3 Beech Planks, 4 Twigs and 10 Flax Fibres. Note what is not in that list: wool. The armchair that lets you turn Winter Burrow fur tuft into Wool Yarn does not itself need any wool, which is a small mercy but also the reason people assume they need yarn before they can make yarn. Three achievements run through this bottleneck: Yearning for Yarn asks you to spin 50 balls, Knitting Advocate is repairing the armchair itself, and Hot Knitting Needles asks for 8 knitted clothing pieces - a count that includes backpacks and shoes, not just sweaters.

Where to farm Fur Tufts

The most specific Winter Burrow fur tuft report we found points north of Gnawtusk's camp. Go through the short dark passage and you reach an open area with two or three ants and a couple of berry bushes. That area usually holds two or three loose Fur Tufts on the ground plus a similar number of dig spots, and dig spots can yield two at a time. Other reliable-sounding leads: the open areas in the pine woods, and the water line around your own house. More broadly, players report fur being more common in the northern parts of the map and around snow holes, and that tufts respawn quickly enough that sweeping the same route once a day is a workable routine. One honest caveat about digging for fur. The player who first suggested it later abandoned the method after their early luck ran out, so treat dig spots as a bonus on a route you are walking anyway rather than as a farming strategy in their own right. For scale: one player finishing the game tallied 188 Fur Tufts consumed in total, 62 of those going into Wool Yarn and 2 more into knitting a backpack. That is a single playthrough, not a target, but it does tell you this is a material you will gather steadily for a long time rather than in one big run.

  • Best specific spot: north of Gnawtusk's camp, through the dark passage, in the open area with ants and berry bushes.
  • Also reported: pine wood clearings, and the water line near your own house.
  • Fur is generally more common in the north of the map and around snow holes.
  • Tufts respawn fast enough that a daily sweep of one route works well.

Snow Fox Fur Tuft is a different item - and the 0/3 bug

If your quest counter is stuck, this is almost certainly why. Moss's "Find Signs of Pinesap" asks for 3 Snow Fox Fur Tufts, which are not the same thing as ordinary Fur Tufts and cannot be substituted. They sit out in the open rather than in dig spots. The clearest description we have puts them in Shadow Pines: head north-east and look for a white clump near rocks, then two more progressively further north. A second guide places them around Moss's home instead. Those two areas are adjacent, so we are presenting both rather than picking a winner. Now the actual bug, confirmed end to end by three separate players in one thread: **if you picked up Snow Fox Fur Tufts before the quest started and put them in your burrow storage, the objective will read 0/3 no matter how many you own.** Storage does not count. Move them from the chest into your inventory and the counter updates immediately. People have re-walked the entire route hunting for tufts that were sitting in their own house the whole time.

  • Snow Fox Fur Tuft is a separate quest item from an ordinary Fur Tuft.
  • Moss's Find Signs of Pinesap needs 3 of them.

What we could not confirm

No source we trust states how many Fur Tufts go into one ball of Wool Yarn. The 188-tuft playthrough tally is arithmetically consistent with roughly 3 per ball, but that is our own division rather than a sourced constant, so we are not publishing it as a rule. We also could not confirm whether the Yearning for Yarn achievement counts flax as well as wool, whether Snow Fox fur can be knitted with at all or is purely a quest item, or what the actual respawn timer is beyond "fast enough for a daily sweep".
