Quick Answer: the number you are looking for

Most people arrive here because a quest counter is higher than they expected. The later Gnawtusk quest, Find Rare Herbs, asks for **5 stashes of common herbs plus 1 stash of rare herbs**. That five is the number that sends people searching, because the early dig spots only account for a handful. A Winter Burrow stash of common herbs has four sources: Gnawtusk's own quest dig spots, ordinary dig spots out in the world, backpacks you find lying around, and - the one that actually solves the problem - the planters Aunty teaches you to build. Round planters grow common herb stashes; the large square ones grow rare. If you are short right now, the planters are the answer. Everything else is finite. This page covers the item and its supply. For the three early dig-spot locations themselves - the snail shell, the scarf tree and the Witchstone - use our dedicated /articles/winter-burrow-gnawtusk-stash-locations guide, which has the route screenshots.

  • Find Rare Herbs needs 5 stashes of common herbs and 1 stash of rare herbs.
  • Sources: Gnawtusk quest dig spots, world dig spots, found backpacks, and Aunty's planters.
  • Round planters grow common herbs. Large square planters grow rare.
  • Planters are the only renewable source - everything else runs out.

Gnawtusk's herb questline in order

Gnawtusk is a forgetful but appreciative squirrel, and his common herbs line is four named quests rather than one. Knowing the order stops you hunting for a stash the game has not asked for yet. Find Stashes comes first and covers two dig spots. Find Stash in a Dark Place follows - he gives you a lantern, and the third stash is at the Witchstone. Find a Stash of Rare Herbs is the odd one: the rare stash is sitting in Aunty's backpack on your own burrow floor, and handing it in rewards you with Healing Tea for Aunty. Then Find Rare Herbs is the big one with the 5-plus-1 requirement. All of the digging is gated behind the Granite Shovel, whose ingredients are Oak Wood, Pine Wood, Granite and Wool Yarn. The Wool Yarn comes from knitting Fur Tuft, and Pine Wood is found north of Gnawtusk's house - so if you are blocked at the very start, it is usually the shovel rather than the herbs.

  • Find Stashes - two dig spots.
  • Find Stash in a Dark Place - lantern given, third stash at the Witchstone.
  • Find a Stash of Rare Herbs - it is in Aunty's backpack on your burrow floor. Reward: Healing Tea for Aunty.
  • Find Rare Herbs - 5 common stashes plus 1 rare.
  • All digging needs the Granite Shovel: Oak Wood, Pine Wood, Granite, Wool Yarn.

Planters: the renewable answer

Aunty teaches the planters, and they are what turn common herbs from a scavenger hunt into a supply you can rely on. Round planters grow stashes of common herbs. The large square ones grow rare herbs. Once they are running, the 5x requirement stops being a problem. There is one gotcha that catches almost everyone, and it is not a bug so much as an unstated rule. The "Build Planter Boxes for Aunty" quest sits at 0/2 after you craft the planters, and it stays there until you actually **place** them in your burrow. Crafting is not enough. Put them down and the counter moves. The Planter Box recipe itself needs 2 Granite, 4 Oak Plank, 4 Beech Plank and 5 Flax Fibre, and it unlocks from Aunty after the healing tea step.

  • Round planter = common herb stashes. Large square planter = rare herbs.
  • Quest stuck at 0/2? You crafted the planters but did not place them. Place them in the burrow.
  • Planter Box: 2 Granite, 4 Oak Plank, 4 Beech Plank, 5 Flax Fibre.
  • Unlocked from Aunty after the healing tea.

When a stash vanishes on pickup

This one is a real bug and it is worth recognising quickly, because the natural reaction - walking back to look for the stash again - does not help. If your inventory is full at the moment a herb stash would drop, it can silently fail to appear. Nothing tells you. The developers' stated recovery is that the unique item shows up in your mailbox if you close the game and start it again. That is the official line, though some players report the mailbox route not working for them, so we would not call it guaranteed. The prevention is simple and worth making a habit: clear a couple of inventory slots before you dig, not after. If you are already stuck short, there are two documented escape hatches. The developer account has pointed players to a Stash of Rare Herbs north-west of Gnawtusk, in the area with the broken-down caravan - that route needs the Granite Axe. And one player found a final common stash sitting in the backpack beside Aunty after rescuing her, which is easy to walk straight past.

  • Full inventory when a stash drops = the stash can silently not appear.
  • Developer recovery: close and restart the game, then check your mailbox.
  • Some players report the mailbox fix not working, so clear slots before digging.
  • Escape hatch: a rare stash north-west of Gnawtusk near the broken-down caravan. Granite Axe required.
  • Escape hatch: check the backpack beside Aunty after rescuing her.

What we could not confirm

The Granite Shovel ingredient list is solid, but the quantities are not. Two aggregator sites give conflicting numbers - one says 6 granite, another says 1 - and neither is authoritative, so we have published the four ingredients without numbers rather than pick one. We also could not confirm exactly where Gnawtusk himself lives. Sources place his first quest's dig spots in Shadow Pines, which is not the same as saying that is where he stands. Whether the third stash is physically reachable before the lantern hand-in is unclear - the lantern timing is confirmed, the gating is not. And planter growth time, whether they need watering, and yield per harvest are completely undocumented in anything we could verify.

  • Unconfirmed: Granite Shovel ingredient quantities. Sources conflict on the granite count.
  • Unconfirmed: Gnawtusk's own location, as distinct from where his dig spots are.
  • Unconfirmed: whether the third stash is reachable before the lantern.
  • Unconfirmed: planter growth time, watering, and yield per harvest.

Frequently asked questions

The common herbs questions that come up most.

  • How many stashes of common herbs do I need? Find Rare Herbs asks for 5 common plus 1 rare.
  • Where do I get a Winter Burrow stash of common herbs? Gnawtusk's dig spots, world dig spots, found backpacks, and round planters.
  • What is the renewable source? Round planters from Aunty. Everything else is finite.
  • Why is Build Planter Boxes stuck at 0/2? You crafted them but did not place them in the burrow.
  • Where is the Stash of Rare Herbs? In Aunty's backpack on your burrow floor for that quest step.
  • A stash did not drop - is it gone? Possibly a full-inventory bug. Restart the game and check your mailbox.

Supply Tip 1

Clear two inventory slots before digging so a common herbs stash cannot silently fail to drop.

Supply Tip 2

Build and then actually place the round planters - that is the only renewable herb supply.

Supply Tip 3

For the three early dig-spot routes, use the dedicated Gnawtusk stash guide.
