If you are searching where to find Granite for the first Granite Pickaxe recipe, do not mine a boulder. Pick up a loose blue-grey chunk from the snow. Eurogamer reports reliable loose pieces on the route between Aunty's house and Bufo's home and in the region north of your burrow around Moss. Their tested progression reaches these searches after the Owl takes Aunty and the first Pickaxe is obtained from Bufo. Scan water edges, roots, grass, and open path borders slowly. The item is small enough to look like scenery, but it has a distinct dark blue-grey color and can be collected by hand. Reserve that first piece for the stronger Pickaxe instead of spending it on an optional craft.

What the first loose Granite looks like
Loose Granite is smaller than the mouse and sits alone on top of the snow. Its blue-grey surface is darker than nearby snow and different from brown wood, red berries, or pale Pebbles. The verified screenshot shows one beside a dark grass clump, exposed roots, and water. You do not need to swing the Sandstone Pickaxe at it. Walk close and use the normal pickup interaction. Large, dark blue-grey boulders are a later farming source; those require the Granite Pickaxe. Keeping the pickup and boulder checks separate solves most “the rock will not react” confusion.

The short Aunty-to-Bufo check
Begin from whichever NPC end is already warm and familiar. Walk the Aunty-to-Bufo corridor in daylight with at least one free inventory slot. Search the edge of each playable path rather than the painted background: waterline, grass base, exposed root, then the next screen. Pick up the first confirmed blue-grey chunk and return instead of extending the trip into a farming loop. That single piece removes the recipe deadlock. Once it is stored, finish An Axe for Bufo, gather 1 Wool Yarn, 1 Pinewood, and 1 Oak Wood, and craft the Granite Pickaxe at home.
Travel in daylight so the blue-grey item separates from the snow.

Why Players Think It Is Missing
The recipe creates a circular-looking requirement: a Granite Pickaxe needs Granite, while Granite boulders need that Pickaxe. The missing distinction is loose Granite. Story timing adds a second trap because the relevant corridor becomes useful after early Aunty and Bufo progression. A third trap is visual: ordinary Pebbles, background rocks, and Granite use similar cold colors. If the object is large and you are swinging the first Pickaxe, stop. You are testing the boulder stage too early. Return to loose-pickup checks and reserve the first piece.

Before You Spend It
Treat the first piece as progression material. The Granite Pickaxe recipe needs exactly one, and unlocking the stronger tool converts boulders into a repeatable source. Spending that piece on optional furniture recreates the same shortage. Put it in a dedicated chest or keep it in inventory only while gathering the other recipe materials. After the stronger Pickaxe is crafted and you can identify the boulders shown above, Granite stops being a one-item scavenger hunt and becomes a normal farming route.

Once the first loose Granite is stored, switch guides according to the next visible task. Use the main Granite Guide for the two confirmed farming areas and boulder identification. Keeping those stages separate prevents a loose-pickup problem from being confused with a missing recipe or an unequipped tool.

If you can pick the object up, you found loose Granite. If it is a large blue-grey boulder, wait for the Granite Pickaxe. If only ordinary rocks appear, continue the Aunty-to-Bufo corridor or try the Moss-side water edges in daylight. If the corridor is still inaccessible, progress Aunty and obtain the first Pickaxe from Bufo. If the stronger recipe is missing, finish An Axe for Bufo after the Aunty rescue and Gnawtusk stash sequence. Do not solve a story-state problem by walking farther into unrelated screens.
