Benjamin at Pine Creek Games confirmed this in a tagged developer reply on November 12, 2025: the lower area requires Granite obtained later, so planting should begin in the first room. Use the planting interaction there, then read the next subobjective before spending materials on the stairs. This is one of those blockers that is entirely about presentation rather than difficulty, which is why it generates so much confusion relative to how simple the fix is. There is a Steam thread whose title says it outright: players think they need to unlock the lower level of the basement first in order to progress. The objective text does not tell you which part of the basement to use, and the moment you walk down and see a blocked-off area, the natural assumption is that the blocked area is where planting happens. So people go off hunting for the tool or material that opens it, and get nowhere, because that material is gated behind a much later part of the game.
