If you are stuck and cannot plant chanterelles because the lower basement is blocked, stop. You do not need to open it. This is not our reading - it is the developer's. Benjamin at Pine Creek Games, posting with the developer tag on Steam on 12 November 2025, answered it directly: "It's Granite and you get that later in the game. So start planting the mushrooms in the first part of the basement, then later you can unlock the second part when further into the game." So the sequence is: plant chanterelles in the part of the basement you already have access to, and carry on with the story. The blocked lower level opens much later, once you have Granite, and it has nothing to do with completing this objective.

There is a Steam thread whose title says it outright: players think they need to unlock the lower level of the basement first in order to progress. The objective text does not tell you which part of the basement to use, and the moment you walk down and see a blocked-off area, the natural assumption is that the blocked area is where planting happens. So people go off hunting for the tool or material that opens it, and get nowhere, because that material is gated behind a much later part of the game. Once you know where to plant chanterelles the fix takes about ten seconds. That mismatch between how long people lose and how small the answer is makes this worth its own page.

The Basement Key is the relevant one here: that is what gets you into the basement in the first place. Once you are down there, the first area is where you plant chanterelles.
