A practical Willow tunnel guide: where the notebook prompt appears, when the Flint Shovel matters, where to dig near home, how the tunnel behaves, and when it is probably a bug.
The Willow tunnel problem is usually not solved by walking farther into the forest. It is solved by checking three states: Willow Notebook, Flint Shovel recipe/craft, and the home-side dig spot. The notebook prompt can appear close to home. After returning the notebook and receiving the shovel path, the tunnel dig spot is near your burrow rather than deep beside Willow. Steam discussions show players getting stuck because the quest says to talk to Willow while the notebook is outside the burrow, or because the Flint Shovel recipe has not appeared yet. There is also a documented tunnel bug in the Steam FAQ: if you excavate the tunnel and do not inspect it right away, the tunnel can become inactive.
Notebook problem: check just outside/near your burrow before re-running to Willow.
Recipe problem: if Flint Shovel is missing at the woodworking bench, progress related story beats and re-check Willow dialogue.
Dig problem: the Willow tunnel dig spot is close to your home entrance, not a random late-game cave.
Bug problem: if you dug it open and it became inactive, compare your state with the Steam FAQ known bug note.
Real gameplay prompt for Willow Notebook. This is the kind of near-home clue players miss when they keep walking back to Willow.

Guide Step
Prerequisites before the tunnel makes sense
First, you need access to Willow. Willow is tied to the south-west route behind granite gates, so if you have not progressed Bufo and the Granite Pickaxe, this guide is too early for your save. Second, you need Willow to send you through the notebook and tunnel errands. Third, you need the Flint Shovel recipe or crafted shovel state. The confusing part is that these steps sit between several other NPC arcs. A player can have Bufo finished but still be missing Moss, Gnarltusk, or Aunty beats that affect what dialogue appears next.
So do not read the map as a straight line. Read it as a quest checklist. If Willow repeats herself, go back to home and inspect nearby prompts. If the workbench does not show Flint Shovel, check whether related story dialogue has been exhausted. If you have the shovel but cannot find the tunnel, stop searching around the far south-west and inspect the home-side dig spot.
Return Notebook: check home-adjacent ground prompts instead of only Willow clearing.
Craft Flint Shovel: use the woodworking bench once the recipe exists.
Dig the tunnel: home-side dig spot near the burrow route, then inspect immediately.

Guide Step
Where to dig the tunnel
Based on player discussion, the Willow tunnel connects Willow-side progress back toward your home. One useful player note describes the home-side dig spot as a few steps from the burrow door, north-east of the entrance, between two large rocks, with a grey fallen-log look. Treat that as a visual clue rather than an exact coordinate. In Winter Burrow, the important thing is the combination: you have the Flint Shovel, the quest is asking for the tunnel, and the dig prompt appears near home.
This is why a map-only answer fails. The same screen can be meaningless before the shovel state and suddenly become the correct screen after Willow progression. If you are standing near Willow and the quest says find or dig a tunnel, return home and inspect the nearby ground. If you are standing near home and see no prompt, re-check the shovel recipe and Willow dialogue.
Start at home, not at Willow, when the quest is specifically about the tunnel entrance.
Look for a small diggable patch, not a large doorway or cave mouth.
Use the shovel after the recipe/craft state is active; walking over the spot early may not help.
After excavating, inspect the tunnel immediately before sleeping or leaving the area.
Real gameplay route-gate reference. Shovel and tunnel progress works like other Winter Burrow gates: the same map space changes once the right tool state is active.

Bug or missing step?
There are two very different failure modes. Missing step means the recipe, dialogue, notebook, or dig spot has not been completed in the right order. Bug means you already excavated correctly but the tunnel became inactive. The Steam FAQ includes a known bug note for the Find the Tunnel quest: if you excavate the tunnel and do not inspect it right away, it can become inactive later. That is not a route-reading issue.
Use this test. If you have never seen the excavation animation, you are probably missing a step or standing at the wrong spot. If you saw the animation, the tunnel appeared open, then it stopped responding after sleeping/leaving, treat it as the known bug path. Check whether your game version has the patch, reload an earlier save if available, and avoid repeating the same route for an hour as though the map is wrong.
Missing step: no shovel recipe, no notebook hand-in, no dig prompt, or wrong side of the map.
Likely bug: tunnel excavated successfully, was visible/open, then later became inactive.
Prevention: inspect the tunnel immediately after excavation before sleeping or routing away.
If stuck after the bug state, check official Steam discussion/FAQ and patch notes rather than farming more materials.

Guide Step
How this connects to Mole Artifact
The tunnel is not the end of Willow. It is a bridge into later Willow progression. After notebook, shovel, and tunnel errands, Willow eventually points toward the Mole Artifact route. That later run is a different type of map problem: you leave Willow, move into an eastern thicket, use vine-cutting and careful center sweeps, and look for a quiet quest object that blends into the ground. If you confuse the tunnel step and the artifact step, the map becomes noisy. Finish the home-side tunnel first, then treat the Mole Artifact as a separate thicket route.
Tunnel step: home-side dig and inspect.
Artifact step: later Willow ask, eastern thicket, vines, spider pressure, central sweep.
Dinner step: after Willow closure, hazelnut/dialogue state can still affect final invitation.
Later Willow follow-up routes move into darker thickets. Keep tunnel errands and Mole Artifact cleanup as separate checklist steps.

FAQ
Fast answers for Willow shovel and tunnel issues.
Where is Willow Notebook? Check near home/outside the burrow before running back to Willow again.
Where do I dig Willow tunnel? Near the home-side route after the Flint Shovel state is active, not deep in Willow clearing.
Why is Flint Shovel not at my bench? You may be missing the right Willow dialogue or adjacent story progress; exhaust NPC dialogue and re-check.
Can the tunnel bug? Yes. Steam FAQ notes a known issue if the excavated tunnel is not inspected immediately.
Does every tunnel connect everywhere? Player discussion suggests tunnel entrances are limited and can be separate systems; do not assume full fast travel.
Supply Tip 1
Check home-side prompts before re-running to Willow.
Supply Tip 2
Inspect the tunnel immediately after digging to avoid the known inactive-tunnel bug state.
Supply Tip 3
Separate Notebook/Tunnel from Mole Artifact; they are not the same route problem.
