Quick answer: where the Fine Woollen Hood is

The Fine Woollen Hood is a fixed quest pickup in the dark woods beyond the area where you found Moss's Heavy Key. Do not search for it around Moss's tent or at Gnawtusk's camp. Start at Moss, walk north to the large skull that marked the Heavy Key location, leave that screen to the left, and cut through two vine barriers while moving north-west. In the following area, take the left branch to an abandoned caravan, a fire pit and an abandoned backpack. From that checkpoint, go south through the thick thorny vines, enter the next area, and continue left until the blue-grey hood is visible on the snow. Pick it up and return it to Moss. The route only works when the HUD shows Find more signs of Pinesap and Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1.

  • Required tool: Flint Axe. A lower-tier axe cannot clear the route.
  • Starting landmark: the large skull where the Heavy Key was lying.
  • Mid-route proof: abandoned caravan, fire pit and backpack in one clearing.
  • Pickup proof: the counter changes from 0/1 after you collect the blue-grey hood.

In-game name

The quest tracker and pickup label use Fine Woollen Hood. Match that wording when checking your active objective and inventory.

Guide Step

Before leaving Moss: check the quest and your axe

Open the task list before you travel. The active heading should be Find more signs of Pinesap, with Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1 underneath it. If that line is missing, the hood run is not your current step. Finish the outstanding Moss and Aunty conversations first, including the earlier Heavy Key and follow-up story hand-ins, then speak to Moss again. The pickup is not a random clothing spawn and it is not something you can knit at home, so roaming the route early will not replace a missing quest trigger. Equip the Flint Axe before setting out. Eurogamer's route check identifies the Flint Axe as the required tool; if the first green vines do not break, that is a progression problem, not a hidden side entrance. Warm fully at Moss's home and carry food that helps you handle the long, cold return. Gnawtusk's lamp is useful because the woods around the caravan are deliberately dark, but it is a visibility aid rather than the item that opens the path.

  • HUD: Find more signs of Pinesap / Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1.
  • Tool: Flint Axe selected and in usable condition.
  • Preparation: full warmth, route food and enough daylight for the outward trip.
  • Optional: Gnawtusk's lamp for the darker screens.

Guide Step

Step 1: return to the Heavy Key skull

Leave Moss's home and head north along the same route used for A Missing Key. The dependable anchor is not a map coordinate; it is the enclosed snow pocket with a large animal skull in the middle. The Heavy Key originally sat beside that skull. If you have not completed that task, use the Heavy Key location guide first, because it explains the north and north-east branch, the earlier vine gate and the tall-grass pocket. Once you stand at the skull, ignore the route that leads back toward Moss and move left until the screen changes. This is the clean starting point for the Fine Woollen Hood route. Players often get lost by beginning at Gnawtusk and guessing which northern exit to take. The skull removes that ambiguity: it is both a confirmed quest landmark and the exact place from which the hood directions begin.

  • At the skull, go left into the next area.
  • Do not use the skull as the pickup location; the hood is several screens farther on.

Guide Step

Step 2: cut the two vine gates and keep north-west

A green vine screen blocks the route almost as soon as you enter the area west of the skull. Select the Flint Axe and cut it. Continue diagonally north-west rather than following the easier-looking lower edge. A second group of vines blocks the same general line; clear that barrier as well and keep pressing forward. This is the most important direction check before the caravan. You should still see Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1 on the left side of the screen, and the environment should become darker and more enclosed. If you reach open shoreline or return to a familiar grass pocket, you left the route. Backtrack to the skull, take the left exit again, and hold the north-west line after the first vines. There is no need to search every snow mound here: the hood is a visible blue-grey object at the end, not a buried stash.

Step 3: use the abandoned caravan and fire pit as your checkpoint

After the second vine passage, go north into the next area. The route splits here. Take the left branch and continue until the abandoned caravan comes into view. The same clearing contains a fire pit and an abandoned backpack, which makes it much more useful than a vague tree landmark. Check all three before continuing: wooden caravan at the top, circular fire pit nearby, backpack on the snow. The backpack contains Kindling that can be used to light the fire. Warm up here instead of gambling on the final screens with a nearly empty warmth bar. If night is close, this is also the sensible place to stop before the last push. The hood is not beside the caravan. When you are ready, face south from this clearing; the thick, thorny vines below are the next correct gate.

Step 4: go south through the thorns, then left to the hood

From the caravan clearing, move south and cut away the large thorny vine barrier with the Flint Axe. Pass through into the next area, then keep moving left. You do not need to mine a wall, dig a mound or search a tree base. The Fine Woollen Hood is lying openly on the snow and is easy to identify by its folded blue-grey shape. Walk onto it and use the pickup prompt. Watch the quest tracker rather than assuming proximity counted: Collect Fine Woollen Hood must change from 0/1. If it remains at zero, step back, approach the visible item again and confirm that the active task is still Find more signs of Pinesap. This screenshot shows the actual object and the open clearing, so it is the final visual check before you turn around.

Guide Step

Return to Moss and unlock the final Pinesap search

Backtrack through the thorn gate and stop at the caravan fire if your warmth is low. Then reverse the north-west vine route, return to the skull pocket, and continue south to Moss. Hand over the Fine Woollen Hood and finish the conversation; carrying the item is not the same as closing the objective. The later Pinesap step reuses this route, which is why remembering the pickup clearing matters. When the HUD eventually changes to It's time to find Pinesap / Find out what happened to Pinesap, return to the exact clearing where the hood was found. The final passage is immediately to the left, behind Flint boulders that require the Flint Pickaxe. Those boulders belong to the next quest stage. They are not part of finding the hood, and the Granite Pickaxe is not the required tool for that final barrier. Keeping those two visits separate prevents the common mistake of arriving with the wrong objective and concluding that the route is broken.

Troubleshooting the Fine Woollen Hood route

If the route still does not line up, diagnose the visible state instead of wandering farther. No hood objective means you are early in Moss's chain. Vines that refuse to break mean the Flint Axe requirement is not met or the wrong tool is selected. No caravan after the second vines usually means you missed the north transition or took the right branch at the split. A visible hood with a 0/1 counter means you still need to use the pickup prompt. A hood already gone with the quest unresolved means it is worth checking your inventory and returning to Moss before repeating the run. Finally, do not treat Gnawtusk alone as a complete route marker; that camp only identifies the broad region. The useful sequence is Moss to Heavy Key skull, left, two north-west vine gates, north, left branch to caravan, south through thorns, then left to the pickup.

  • No Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1: finish current Moss or Aunty hand-ins.
  • Vines will not break: return after obtaining the Flint Axe.
  • No caravan: return to the second vine gate, go north, then take the left branch.
  • Too cold: use the backpack Kindling at the caravan fire pit before continuing.
  • Ready for Pinesap: use the separate Pinesap guide only after the final objective appears.

Supply Tip 1

Start only when Collect Fine Woollen Hood 0/1 is visible.

Supply Tip 2

Bring the Flint Axe; the route contains several vine barriers.

Supply Tip 3

Use the caravan backpack Kindling and fire pit before the final push.

Supply Tip 4

Remember the pickup clearing because the later Pinesap route returns there.
