Use two verified early Flint pickups, finish Bufo and Pollywog for the Flint Pickaxe recipe, then mine the correct deep brown and black boulder clusters.
Before you own the Flint Pickaxe, collect loose Flint in the region between Aunty's house and Bufo's home. The two clearest checks are the Abandoned Backpack south of Bufo and two dark pieces tucked behind a boulder on the Aunty-Bufo route. Later, finish Bufo's Pollywog quest chain to receive the Flint Pickaxe recipe. Craft it at the burrow, then use it on deep brown and black Flint boulder clusters north of Moss or between Aunty and Bufo. Do not strike blue-grey Granite boulders and expect Flint: the two resources have different shapes, colors, and tool gates.
No pickaxe yet: search for small, jagged, dark ground pieces and open the backpack south of Bufo.
Recipe missing: complete Find Pollywog, bring Bufo both pies, deliver the Wooden Key, and return to Bufo after the reunion.
Recipe owned: craft the Flint Pickaxe with 1 Flint, 1 Silk Yarn, 2 Birch Wood, and 1 Pine Plank.
Boulder will not break: confirm the equipped tool says Flint Pickaxe and the target is a deep brown-black cluster.

Guide Step
Know what Flint looks like before you leave home
Loose Flint is small, jagged, and noticeably darker than Granite. It can look almost black against clean snow and is easy to pass when the screen is busy with grass, leaves, Pebbles, and snow particles. Granite pieces are larger and more blue-grey. Flint boulders are a third shape: they are deep brown and black rocks grouped into a rounded cluster of several sizes. That distinction matters because early loose pieces can be picked up by hand, while a Flint boulder needs the Flint Pickaxe. Treat the first trip as an identification run. Empty several inventory slots, travel in daylight, and stop at the two confirmed landmarks below. Once one piece enters the bag and the objective counter changes, you know what to scan for on later trips. The guide does not promise a fixed respawn timer because the published sources do not document one; revisit confirmed areas after normal story progress or rest instead of waiting on an invented schedule.
Do not waste the first stack
Keep at least 1 Flint untouched for the Flint Pickaxe recipe. A known player failure is spending every early piece before the recipe arrives, then searching while still unable to mine Flint boulders.

Guide Step
Location 1: Abandoned Backpack south of Bufo
Start this check from Bufo's home, not from the world map. Leave through the south-west exit, turn south, and keep the water beside you. Follow the shoreline until a discarded brown backpack appears on the snow beside a large rock and a patch of Clover. The screenshot below shows the exact arrangement: water at the upper right, the snow-covered rock on the right, Clover behind the mouse, and the open backpack on the ground. Interact with the backpack and take the Flint inside. If you reach a new screen without seeing that rock-Clover-backpack combination, return to Bufo and repeat the south-west exit; wandering farther along another shoreline only makes the landmark harder to diagnose. This stash is useful when the next recipe needs Flint but you cannot yet mine boulders. Deposit what you collect before buying optional crafts, because the Flint Pickaxe itself requires one piece.

Location 2: two loose Flint pieces behind a boulder
The broad early search area is the route between Aunty's house and Bufo's home. Eurogamer's clearest ground example is a pair hidden behind a large rounded boulder. In the screenshot, the Pebbles and Flint task is visible with Collect Flint 1/2, and the arrow marks the side of the boulder where the second pickup is easy to miss. Do not attack this rounded object and do not confuse the blue-black background rocks with a mineable resource. Walk around the foreground boulder, look for the small dark jagged pickup on the snow, and use the collect prompt. Then sweep back toward the known path rather than pushing into an unverified branch. This short check is better than circling every rock on the map: it gives you a task counter, a recognizable boulder shape, and the Aunty-Bufo corridor as three independent confirmations. If the counter remains unchanged, move closer to the dark ground piece; standing beside the large boulder is not itself a pickup.
Two loose pieces sit behind this boulder on the early route. The visible 1/2 task counter is the best proof that you are collecting Flint rather than Pebbles or Granite. Image credit: Eurogamer/Pine Creek Games.

Guide Step
Unlock the Flint Pickaxe through Bufo and Pollywog
Finding loose Flint and unlocking the Flint Pickaxe are separate jobs. Bufo gives the recipe only after the Pollywog story chain is finished. First, find Pollywog at the campfire clearing south of Bufo; the dedicated route is in /articles/winter-burrow-pollywog-guide. Return to Bufo and complete the food step by bringing one Blackberry Pie and one Rowanberry Pie. Take Bufo's Wooden Key back to Pollywog, then give Pollywog time and return to Bufo. After Pollywog is reunited with Bufo, the Flint Pickaxe crafting recipe unlocks. Go home, use the crafting table, and open the Woodworking section. The complete recipe is 1 Flint, 1 Silk Yarn, 2 Birch Wood, and 1 Pine Plank. Seeing a recipe in the handbook is not the same as owning the tool: craft it, verify it appears in inventory, and put it on the quick-select bar before testing any boulder. If Bufo does not award the recipe, read the active task and finish the missing pie, key, or reunion conversation instead of searching for another crafting station.
Find Pollywog south of Bufo and complete the first conversation.
Bring Bufo 1 Blackberry Pie and 1 Rowanberry Pie.
Deliver the Wooden Key to Pollywog, wait for the story step, then return to Bufo.
At home, craft the recipe from the Woodworking section and equip the finished Flint Pickaxe.

Guide Step
Mine Flint boulders after the tool is in your inventory
With the Flint Pickaxe equipped, look for deep brown and black rock clusters rather than loose ground shards. Confirmed areas include the region north of Moss's home and the land between Aunty and Bufo. The screenshot below shows a Flint boulder group used as the final blocker on the Pinesap route. It is circled beside the Fine Woollen Hood clearing while the task reads It's time to find Pinesap. That screen is a quest gate, not the recommended first farming trip, but it is an excellent shape reference: irregular dark rocks packed into a cluster, much darker than the blue-grey Granite boulders shown in /articles/winter-burrow-granite-guide. Select the Flint Pickaxe and use the mining action. If the object does not react, inspect the selected tool icon and inventory name before changing routes. The Granite Pickaxe is an earlier tier and will not substitute for the Flint Pickaxe at this barrier. Once one confirmed cluster breaks and Flint enters the bag, mark that route for later return and head home before mixing the trip with unrelated quest objectives.

Guide Step
Diagnose the exact blocker instead of searching a larger area
If you have no pickaxe, use the backpack and loose-pickup checks; a boulder route cannot solve an early tool problem. If the backpack is empty, check whether it was already collected and inspect inventory or home storage before assuming the save is stuck. If loose pieces are hard to see, use daylight and compare them with the marked 1/2 screenshot: Flint is the small dark object, not the large rounded boulder. If the Flint Pickaxe recipe is absent, finish Bufo's entire Pollywog chain, including both pies, the Wooden Key delivery, the waiting step, and the final Bufo conversation. If the recipe exists but a boulder ignores you, confirm the tool was actually crafted and selected. Finally, separate Granite from Flint. Loose Granite is larger and blue-grey; Granite boulders need the Granite Pickaxe. Flint boulders are deep brown-black clusters and need the later Flint Pickaxe. The focused /articles/winter-burrow-pickaxe-guide explains the earlier Sandstone and Granite tiers, while /articles/winter-burrow-pinesap-guide covers the quest-only Flint barrier shown above.
No early Flint: check the Abandoned Backpack and the marked boulder between Aunty and Bufo.
No recipe: finish Pollywog, both pies, the Wooden Key, waiting, and the Bufo reunion.
Recipe but no mining: craft and equip the finished Flint Pickaxe at home.
Wrong drop or no reaction: compare the target with the Flint and Granite screenshots before walking farther.
08
Guide Step
A short Flint run that has a clear finish
For the first collection run, leave home with several empty slots and travel through Aunty toward Bufo in daylight. Check the loose-pickup boulder on the corridor, enter Bufo's home to reset and confirm the next task, then leave by the south-west exit for the shoreline backpack. Once the backpack is collected, return to Bufo or home instead of extending the run into Moss. The purpose is to secure known pieces, not to fill the inventory. After the Flint Pickaxe is crafted, split mining into a separate trip. Choose either the Aunty-Bufo area or the region north of Moss, confirm one dark boulder cluster, mine it, and return. Keeping the early pickup route separate from the later mining route makes every failure readable: you will know whether the missing piece is location knowledge, Bufo quest progress, recipe materials, or the equipped tool. Store one Flint beside your woodworking materials until the pickaxe is finished; only then treat later Flint as spare crafting stock.

Guide Step
Flint questions players usually ask
Where is the earliest reliable Flint? Search between Aunty and Bufo, then collect the Abandoned Backpack south of Bufo by following the water from the south-west exit. Do I need a pickaxe for loose Flint? No; walk onto the small dark piece and collect it. What breaks Flint boulders? The Flint Pickaxe, unlocked after Bufo's Pollywog quest chain. What does the pickaxe cost? 1 Flint, 1 Silk Yarn, 2 Birch Wood, and 1 Pine Plank at the home crafting table under Woodworking. Where are Flint boulders? Published locations include north of Moss and between Aunty and Bufo; the final Pinesap route also uses a Flint boulder barrier. Why does my Granite Pickaxe fail? It is a lower tool tier and is meant for Granite targets, not the deep brown-black Flint clusters. Is there a guaranteed respawn time? No fixed timer is published by the verified sources, so revisit confirmed areas after normal play or story progress.
Ground pickup: small, jagged, dark Flint; no tool required.
Mineable target: deep brown-black Flint boulder cluster; Flint Pickaxe required.
Early route: Aunty to Bufo plus the shoreline backpack south of Bufo.
Later gate: return to the hood clearing with the correct Pinesap task and Flint Pickaxe.
Supply Tip 1
Reserve 1 early Flint for the Flint Pickaxe recipe.
Supply Tip 2
Use the task counter and screenshots to confirm the pickup before extending the route.
Supply Tip 3
Mine only after the finished Flint Pickaxe is selected in inventory.
